Please read the following installation notes before installing PageMaker:
IMPROVING PERFORMANCE
While you can install PageMaker on a Macintosh using system version 6.0.2, it is recommended that you upgrade your system to 6.0.3 or newer for best performance.
While 1MB is the minimum amount of memory (RAM) needed to run PageMaker, for best performance it is recommended that you have at least 2MB of RAM or more.
PageMaker is a 1,500K (1.5MB) application. What doesn’t fit into memory (RAM) is swapped from the hard disk and will affect performance. If you have 700k or less of RAM and try to run PageMaker you will get a warning; if you have 500K or less you won’t be able to run PageMaker.
•For best performance with a 1MB system:
-Reduce the size of your System as much as possible
-Install the minimum number of fonts, DAs, CDEVs, and INITs
-In PageMaker, install the minimum number of import and export filters and APDs (Aldus Printer Drivers)
-For quicker screen redraw, set the “Greek text below” option in the “Preferences” dialog box to a higher value. Set the “Detailed graphics” option to either “Normal” or “Gray out”
-Open only one Story Edit window at a time
-Don’t overlap palettes on the screen
-Avoid “working ahead” of the computer
-Don’t edit styles while in the Story Editor
-Avoid cutting and pasting large amounts text and graphics at one time such as a whole page of information. If you have copy/pasted a large amount, reduce the file size of the Clipboard by copy/pasting one or two words.
-Avoid taking many actions between copying and pasting. It is best to copy and then paste immediately
•Options to improve performance in a 1MB system:
-Add more memory
-Add an accelerator board
•For best performance with a 2-2.5 MB system running under the Finder:
-From the desktop, check the Finder to see how much memory is available to run PageMaker. If there is 1,500K or more, PageMaker will work just fine. If not, see if you can reduce the size of your System file. PageMaker works best when it can run in 1,500K or more of memory. Look at the above 1MB system list to see what else you can do to improve performance.
•For best performance with a 2-2.5 MB system running under MultiFinder:
-Allocate at least 1,500K to PageMaker
-Install only the filters and APDs you need
If you plan to work through the PageMaker tutorial, you must install the “MS Word 4.0 Import” filter.
Install the “Story Import filter” to import stories from PageMaker 4.0 publications. Instructions on how to use the story import filter are included only in its online Help.
If you purchase additional dictionaries for PageMaker 4.0, and Aldus Persuasion is on your hard disk, remove Persuasion’s installer utility before installing these dictionaries. Doing so will make it clear to the control file which installer utility must be used.
If you are installing PageMaker 4.0 while attached to a file server, the installer will run diagnostics on all mounted volumes, not just on your hard disk.
You will need approximately 7MB of free space on your hard disk to install PageMaker and all of the filters, printer drivers, and tutorial files. Once installed, all of the files will occupy nearly 5MB of disk space. The 2MB difference is space that is needed for PageMaker to assemble its files from the installation disks.

••Table Editor Guide••
Page 25: “Clear...” Lets you specify what you want cleared from the selected area of the table. You can clear the text, line styles, and shades by selecting “All” or select to clear just the text, lines, or shades. “Undo” is not available following the “Clear…” command.
Page 29: “Number format…” You cannot edit the number format. For example, you cannot change the currency symbol.
Changing a number format permanently changes the value of a number when the format rounds the value. For example, if you apply a number format of “0.00” to 5.789213, the number will permanently change value to 5.78.
Pages 20 and 23 “Table setup…,” page 30 “Insert…,” and page 31 “Delete…”
If you add or delete columns to an existing table using these commands you will increase or decrease the overall width of the table. If a column is added, the table increases by the width of the new column. If a column is deleted, the table width decreases by the same amount.
Page 29: “Column width…”
If you resize a column using this command, the overall table width will increase or decrease by the same amount.
Reverse type
When reverse type style is applied to 2 or more cells that already have two or more styles applied to the text, text in all cells will revert to normal reverse type. For example, cell A1 has bold text, cell A2 has italic text, if you apply reverse type style to both cells at the same time text will revert to normal reverse type style.
Shades
Shades in tables will exactly match PageMaker shades when printed with the Apple printer driver and will be approximate when printed with the Aldus printer driver. To print using the Apple driver, hold down the Option key when you choose “Print…” from PageMaker’s File menu.
Text
When you have wide columns of text, the text in them may sometimes overflow a cell boundary.
When printing a Table Editor PICT in PageMaker using the Apple driver, text line endings may be slightly truncated.
“Number format…”
At different views you will see slightly different line endings. For greatest accuracy in viewing line endings use “Actual size.”
Resizing the Table Editor PICT files in PageMaker may produce irregular border line joins.
Line styles applied to cell borders are shared with adjacent cells.
Defaults
There are three levels of defaults in Table Editor; application level defaults, table specific defaults, and range specific defaults.
Application level defaults are set when no table is open and will apply to any new table. For example, in the “Table setup” dialog box you can change the default number of columns from 3 to 5. Any new table will then have 5 columns.
Table specific defaults are set when a table is open but no cells are selected. If a menu item or option is selected and changed, the new settings will apply only to new columns or rows which are added to the table from the “Table setup” dialog box.
Range specific defaults are applied to a range of selected cells. When a cell or range of cells are selected and a formatting change is made, the new formatting characteristics are applied to the selected range.
•PAGEMAKER STORY IMPORTER FILTER
The Story Importer filter lets you place any or all stories from other PageMaker 4.0 publications into the current publication using the “Place” command.
When you select a PageMaker publication or template file from the “Place document” dialog box, the “PageMaker Story Importer” dialog box appears and displays the first 20 characters of each story in the publication. Select the story you want to place and click “OK.” The selected story will be imported into the current publication. Refer to the Story Importer’s online Help for additional information on how to use this filter.
•TEXT COMPOSITION AND HYPHENATION
Publications created in PageMaker 3.x will retain computer-inserted hyphens in the text stream when converted to PageMaker 4.0. This reduces the amount of recomposition necessary in the 4.0 publication, but further hyphenation may override the hyphens previously inserted by PageMaker 3.x.
•COPYING AND PASTING
If you are running in MultiFinder and have trouble using the Clipboard to cut, copy, or paste between PageMaker and the Scrapbook or other applications, try increasing PageMaker’s allocated application memory. With PageMaker closed, select the PageMaker 4.0 application file from the desktop and choose “Get Info” from the File menu. Increase the “Application Memory Size” and try again.
If you paste text from another application into PageMaker, and the pasted object has both a PICT and a TEXT representation, you can choose which representation you want to use: If the text tool is selected when you paste (or when you show the Clipboard before pasting), the object will be pasted as a story; however, if the pointer tool is selected, the object will be pasted as a PICT graphic.
TIFF images work best if they are imported into PageMaker using the “Place” command—not the Clipboard since the Clipboard may lose some of the image information.
•POWER PASTING (STEP AND REPEAT)
Option + “Paste” (Option + Command + v) lets you copy an object, option-paste it (resulting in a second object at the same location), drag the second object a small distance from the first, and then perform several consecutive option-pastes. This results in a series of equidistant objects, separated from each other by the amount of the original drag.
•CROPPING TIFF IMAGES
Before cropping any TIFF image, make sure it is displayed at high resolution.
•PRINTING
In the “PostScript print options” dialog box, “Print PostScript to disk” is dimmed and unavailable and will print as “Normal” under any of the following conditions:
—With any percentage other than 100% in the scaling box
—When “Thumbnails” is checked
—When you select “Manual feed” in the “Print” dialog box
•KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS
Option + “OK” automatically gets you out of nested dialog boxes. For example, when you are defining an option from the “Paragraph rule options” dialog box, selecting Option + “OK” will automatically “OK” you out of all three dialog boxes. If any of the dialog boxes require user input, the auto-exit will stop at that point.
To search for an index marker in story view, type ^ + ; in the “Find what” edit box in the “Find” or “Change” dialog box.
Command + spacebar toggles between the currently selected tool and the pointer tool.
When a publication is open, Command + “About PageMaker®…” displays a list of all the installed import and export filters and language dictionaries.
Shift + “About PageMaker®…” displays the names of the PageMaker 4.0 engineering development team.
•THE ALDUS FOLDER
The Aldus folder contains files that may be shared among Aldus applications. This might include the Aldus Prep file, the APDs used for printing, the spelling and hyphenation dictionaries, and the filters used to import and export documents. When you install PageMaker, the Installer creates the Aldus folder within your System folder.
Once PageMaker is installed, you should never have to worry about the location or contents of the Aldus folder. However, if the Aldus folder is modified or deleted, then PageMaker may be unable to find or use it.
PageMaker remembers the most recent location of the Aldus folder. When you open PageMaker, it uses this location information, or path, to find the Aldus folder. If the path is no longer correct, PageMaker searches for the Aldus folder in the System folder and then in the folder where PageMaker is located. If PageMaker still cannot locate the Aldus folder, PageMaker asks you to locate the folder. This new path is then remembered by PageMaker so that the next time PageMaker is launched, it will not have to search for the Aldus folder.
Other PageMaker files
In addition to files in the Aldus folder, PageMaker uses files that are kept in other folders and are needed to run PageMaker. The Installer puts these files in either the PageMaker application folder or the System folder.
In the PageMaker application folder:
•“PM4 Help” This is PageMaker’s Help file.
In the System folder:
•“PM4 RSRC” This file contains language information for the specific language installation of PageMaker and is required for PageMaker to run. For example, for the French version of PageMaker this file contains the French translations of menus, dialog boxes, alert boxes, and other language-specific features.
•“PM4 Defaults.” This file contains PageMaker defaults. PageMaker tries to find this file immediately upon being launched. If PageMaker cannot locate this file it will use built-in defaults to launch PageMaker and will create a new defaults file when you quit PageMaker.
•MICROSOFT MAIL
If you are set up on a network running Microsoft Mail, you can send, receive and place publications through Mail from within PageMaker.
•IMPORTING FILES FROM WORD 1.05
When you import a file from Word 1.05, the header and footer text both appear at the head of the PageMaker publication.
•IMPORTING FILES FROM WORDPERFECT 5.1
PageMaker does not currently have an import filter for WordPerfect 5.1 formatted files. However, you can save your files in 5.0 format and then import them into PageMaker.
•SUPERVIEWER DA
When running PageMaker with SuperviewerDA, use MultiFinder instead of Finder and do not cancel SuperviewerDA until a file has been viewed. You may want to contact Solutions, Inc. for an updated release of SuperviewerDA.
